In the production of spherical catalysts or precursor materials, silica is a highly effective anticaking aid for spray drying operations. The wet slurry gets dried in the air stream and forms into spherical granules. When silica is fed into the process it envelops the granules, keeping them from sticking together and adhering to the walls of the spray dryer. Adding silica as a spray drying aid, the efficiency of the production process by preventing costly and time-consuming system downtimes can be optimized. Silica with small particles such as AEROSIL® 300, AEROSIL® R 972 and SIPERNAT® 38 are recommended for this application.

Powdered construction additives are usually produced by spray drying. This technology requires flow aids for a cost-efficient production process and for powders with consistent quality and good handling and storage properties. Evonik’s AEROSIL®, SIPERNAT® and ZEOFREE® silica and silicate products are excellent free flow and anti-caking aids for spray drying. In addition to optimizing the quality of the spray granules, they contribute to a trouble-free, long-time operation without cleaning shutdowns and improved yield, optimizing the production costs and sustainability.
When feeding SIPERNAT®, ZEOFREE® or AEROSIL® into the spray tower, the silica or silicate binds to the drying particles and forms a protective layer on their surface. This reduces the stickiness of particles and prevents sticking of powders to the spray dryer walls and clogging of pipes. Furthermore, Evonik’s silica and silicates ensure that powdered building materials do not cake during bagging, transportation and storage so that they can be precisely dosed and easily processed.
